From one day old to fully-grown we look after our chickens with great care at every stage of their development

Our chicks arrive on the farm in small groups, at just one day old. The chicks are housed in special sheds that have plenty of warm bedding, a gas heater and good ventilation. As the birds grow the gas heater is turned off, so that the bird becomes stronger and able to adjust to the weather conditions outside their pens.

Once the birds are strong enough, after about 3 weeks, the pop holes are opened and the birds are free to roam on the range to their heart’s content, during daylight hours. Then when darkness falls they are brought in for their own protection from outside predators.

Each flock has its own mobile pen, which will give the chicken shelter, food and water, as well as access to its own individual field.

These individual fields are well established traditional English pasture, consisting of various grasses and clovers. The fields also have strategically placed perches and shelters, encouraging the birds to leave their pens and explore.

The freedom and access the bird has to natural food sources and to roam the large field, ensures maximum taste and flavour. Packington Poultry meets all of the high environmental and welfare standards that we expect today, while maintaining traditional values.

It is a wonderful sight seeing the birds roaming free just as nature intended.
