Whilst at university, I felt the increasing concern throughout the country as to how food was actually being produced. Was it British? Was it intensively reared? What were the welfare implications for the animal? What were the effects for the environment?

I felt that people were becoming increasingly concerned about quality, welfare and traceability as opposed to just the cost.

I also found that butchers were often shy about revealing the source of the chicken that they stocked in their shop; especially as they are so proud of their beef, pork and lamb.

On leaving university I decided to rear poultry for the table. I wanted to produce a chicken that was succulent and full of flavour. A chicken that had lived a life where their welfare and environment were of paramount importance.

I wanted to produce a bird that both the butchers and I could be proud of.

Our Farm

My family has been farming for over 70 years. Through the years the skills and experience have been handed down from generation to generation. My father learnt from his father in exactly the same way I now learn from him.

Our approach is important to the development of the farm and our way of life because we all believe passionately in sustainable and ethical farming. We realised that consumers where being turned off by high-density, low quality animal farming that paid little notice to animal welfare. We realised that low density, environmentally sound and welfare orientated farming could have a future and would help our family continue farming this land for our next generations to come.

I hope you share our family values and enjoy our chickens as well as our pork (www.packingtonpork.co.uk)
